Synopsis: Mugen continues to get his ass handed to him by the eye-patched leader. He dashes for his sword, wedged in the cross, but to no avail. The leader drives the butt of his staff into Mugen, and says he wants him to feel their disgrace. As Fuu stands in front of the decrepid hut, a short man greets her from the shadows of the house. She asks if he is Kasumi Seizou? But, he is not. This isn't a place for young girls to come around, and he asks her to leave. Fuu tells him she has came a long way. The short man understands that fuu is Kasumi's daughter and opens up. Meanwhile, Mugen is still being yanked around. He is drug around until the leader has to hold him up. Then, he pushes him against an old beam. The leader says he will teach Mugen what it feels like to be smeared with disgrace and allowed to live. Mugen stares at the bright sky above and says "Stop fooling around. I've lived with every kind of discrace and have nothing to learn from you... If you point your sword at someone, you either kill or are killed. That's it. Someone who isn't prepared for that shouldn't bitch!" With that, the leader drives him into the rubble. Falling, Mugen pulls the tanto from his sheath and throws it at the leader. But, it is quickly knocked away. That was Mugen's trump card. He stumbles to the crucifix, where his sword is embedded, and pulls it out. "Sneaky," says the leader. The old man enters the hut and kneels over a bed ridden figure. He says that a girl has come from far away to you, Seizou-san. Seizou appears to be in his final hour. He lies on his back, with his eyes closed, and makes no movements besides uttering a few words. He asks for the girl to be allowed in. The old man nods for Fuu to enter, and she cautiously steps inside. Seizou makes a wheezing cough and apologizes for his condition. He speaks to the girl, but is mostly blind. Fuu timidly speaks. "Ever since I was young, I lived with my mother. I was told my father died a long time ago. But that was wrong. He went away and left my mother and I behind. When she was dying, she told me this. Even now when asked about my father, I say I don't have one. I'm no longer that person's daughter. Even if I meet him, I don't want to hear any excuses. I can't forgive him. That person probably doesn't know how many troubles we had, or how my mother died of illness. If I met him, I'd definitely smack him...but now it's not fair. I can't do anything if you're this frail." Fuu turns to the exit. As she leaves, Seizou breathes her name. He opens his eyes to see a shadow of his daughter in the doorway. She says, "I dont think we'll meet again. Good bye." She closes the door behind her, and sadly leans back on it. She remembers her childhood, and praying to God. She asked to meet her father one day. In the church, Mugen seeks shelter from the cleeve of the leader's scythe. The flailing blade keeps Mugen at bay from using any kind of fighting technique, and it slowly knicks away at him. Mugen devises a new strategy; to bring the remaining supports of the church down. Outside the hut, the old man speaks to Fuu. It is as he thought that Fuu is Seizou's daughter. He has heard a lot about her, but is stopped in mid sentence. Strolling up the path is the unrivaled assassin, Kariya. He glances at Fuu as he walks untouched in the hut. Fuu screams at him to stop, but the old man holds her back. Kariya walks to the bed and asks, "You're Kasumi Seizou, aren't you? I'm Director Kariya Kagetoki. By order of the government, I have come to take you life." Seizou has accepted his fate and says that he might as well be dead, anyways. Kariya grants him his final words and he pleads to Fuu. Seizou says he has no right to ask for forgiveness, but there was never a day when he forgot about them. He apologizes. Kariya draws his sword and with one fell swoop, ends the life of Kasumi Seizou. The leader yells in anger for Mugen to come out of hiding. One by one the pillars are destroyed until finally, they can no longer support the church. The supports crumble around them both. Kariya cleans his blade and speaks to Fuu and the old man. "After I've killed Kasumi, my orders are to kill his family and followers." The old man tries to buy Fuu time as she runs away, but he goes down easily. Kariya heads out the door and follows after Fuu. Mugen and the leader emerge from the church rubble. The leader snickers as his eye patch floats to the ground. He turns his head to reveal the same bloodshot eyes, which his brother, the troll, had. His personality turns to lunacy, as he is enraged to kill Mugen. Mugen runs across the shore dodging the scythe. The leader turns the boulders around them to dust as he aims for his prey. "Ready or not, here I come!" Fuu races as far as she can from the assassin, but she's coming to the end of a cliff. She stumbles on the ground, but Kariya presses forward. Mugen tries for a desperate attempt. He chucks his sword high above the leaders head, which lands behind him. Mugen gets in close to kick the scythe behind the sword and wraps his body around him. He pulls the leader down, so that he is now sitting on top of him with their legs locked. He falls backward, which forces the leader upwards, and pulls on the chain. As the chain retracks, the head of the scythe cuts through the air and the leader. His head is lobbed off and that is that. Mugen stands up relieved. However, his work is not done. A gun shot is fired and the bullet pierces his side. Behind him sits the third brother, crippled in the wheel chair. Fuu reaches the end of the line and peers down the cliff. On the bottom, she spots Mugen, but she has her own problem. Kariya catches up and says he is honored. Fuu should now face her death bravely, such as her samurai father. In the distance, a ronin samurai emerges. Jin's komono has been torn, his hair is down, and he carries a large gash on his torso, but he still lives. Kariya praises Jin's good fortune, but asks why he returns. He has been granted a second chance and will now have it taken. Isn't there no master worth risking his life for? Jin reveals that he has always fought for himself. His sword was always his own. Yet, he remembers his final lesson from Mariya Enshiro. Mariya says, "The one way to defeat an opponent you can't win against is not to win yourself. A simultaneous strike must be made. Create a small opening, and let them strike you. Strike as the opening appears. The chances of your living through it are small. If possible...please don't ever use it." Jin says with a smile, "such an unpleasent duty." Mugen walks to the wheelchair brother, who carries a smug grin. In one of his hands, he carries a small match and lights a stick of dynamite. Mugen sees the spark and is startled. He kicks the bottom the chair, and a hidden stash of dynamite rolls out. A panicked expression spreads across his face. Jin and Kariya draw their swords and their deadly dance begins. They both cut the air as one evades the other. Finally, Jin has his back turned and Kariya seizes the opportunity. Kariya drives his blade into Jin, but hasn't noticed this predicament. It takes him a second to realize that it was he who's been played. Jin used his other katana to stab blindly into Kariya's gut. "It can't be...You let me stab you on purpose..." he says. Jin pulls out his sword, and Kariya falls to the ground. Down at the shore, a large explosion erupts. Fuu turns her attention from Jin down to Mugen. Mugen's body lays battered and broken on the rocks. The heaven's open back up, and a crowd of followers stand around him. He mumbles, "you again...This time it might be the end for me." From the air, a flock of birds surround Mugen, and he is called back into consciousness by Fuu. He awakens to find Fuu crouched over him. He imagined she was the grim reaper. She says that she wanted to go alone. Mugen asks if she met the Sunflower Samurai? Still in tears, she nods. Mugen crawls from the ground and approaches Jin. He holds out his sword, and says "As promised. It's time to settle things with you." Jin obliges and does the same. Fuu can hardly believe her eyes. As the sun sets, they make a dash for the other and clash swords. However, upon impact, both of their blades shatter. They make a sigh of exhaustion and joke about the outcome. Time passes and Fuu heads back to the old cliff. The old man is still alive, and they bury Kasumi Seizou. He says that Kasumi wanted to take Fuu and her mom with him. But, they would have been followed by the shogunates's Christian hunters. That is why he came to the island alone. Fuu realizes that in her memories, her father was large and strong. But, when she met him, it was different. Yet, he was definitely her father. Jin and Mugen lay in the hut bandaged and recovering. They acknowledge the others presence, and that they're still alive. Mugen says it's weird. Until now, when he found someone stronger than him, he wouldn't be satisfied until he killed them. But, right now, he doesn't feel like killing him. Jin says that he's finally found what he was looking for. He was always alone, but has found friends for the first time. Fuu and the old man enter. The old man says it's been about a week. Not surprisingly, Mugen and Jin are hungry. They prepare a meal and Mugen and Jin dig in. As they eat, Fuu watches them, quietly. All of them recover and are back in good health. It's now time for them to carry on their way. Jin says, "Let us meet again." But Fuu has one last thing to get off her chest. When they first started their journey, they agreed upon a bet. If the coin was tails, then the two would come with her. When the coin had landed, it was actually heads! Mugen and Jin are amazed at her trickery. Mugen says, "What was this whole journey?" Fuu confidently heads in her direction and says, "Lets meet, again," and they head their seperate ways.
Fuu reveals the pain which she and her mother went through while growing up. This is why she admits to saying that her father is dead. It's been speculated that perhaps her mother had to work as a prostitute and raised Fuu through some touchy environments. This could be why her mother passed away from illness, and why Fuu has a general dislike from gambling and prostitution. From her childhood, Fuu prays to God. This could mean that she and her mother were also Christians in Japan. Before Fuu, Jin, and Mugen head there seperate ways, we notice that Jin is no longer wearing his glasses. They most likely represent his feelings to not open up to anyone else or have friends. It wasn't until he began roaming the country that he started wearing the glasses. The ending finishes with the theme song "San Francisco by Midicronda." The trio walk their seperate paths. |
