| Synopsis: The first part of the episode contains some foreshadowing. We are introduced to Mugen and Jin, who are being tried as criminals with the penalty of decapitation. The Daikan asks them if they have any regets. They have none. Next, we are introduced to Fuu. She is working in a tea shop and not the best waitress. Sitting in the restaurant is the Daikan's son, whose henchmen are being a nuisance. Outside the village, the Daikan is collecting pay from a poor tenant. He orders his guards, of the Yagyuu clan who are "top class swordsmen, to kill the man. However, Jin intervenes. He questions the Yagyuu clan's honor to work for the Daikan and insults the Daikan. The Yagyuu charge, and it only takes Jin 3 turns to finish them off. The Daikan orders more men to attack Jin, but none obey. Jin picks up 3 twinkies and walks away. Coming into the restaurant, we find Mugen. He exchanges glances with Fuu and sits in the corner. Instantly, Mugen makes Fuu an offer of 50 dango, rice cakes, to clean the hoodlums out of tea shop. Fuu barters with Mugen for an offer of 20 dango, but he declines and waits patiently. While walking back to the kitchen, Fuu (clumsily) trips, spilling tea on the Daikan's son. The Daikan's son says he must cut off her fingers. Fuu offers Mugen 100 dango to save her. Mugen exchanges words with the henchman, Ryujiro, and easily cuts off his arm. This is where we see the animal side of Mugen and his talent of fighting. The Daikan's son nervously interrupts the fighting and brags about his feudal class, but Mugen cares nothing about it. He grabs the son's hand and tells the henchmen to bring back his father's swordsmen, or he will break every finger on the count of five. Enters Jin. Mugen mistakes Jin for the Yagyuu clan swordsmen and lashes out at Jin. Jin comments that "he" killed the clan, but it makes no difference to Mugen. As Mugen and Jin fight, Ryujiro comes back to the tea shop. He kicks over some alcohol and sets the tea shop on fire. However, Mugen and Jin make no attempt to allow the flames stop their battle. Enter Mugens dream sequence. Mugen sees his sword and hair catch on fire, and Jin batheing. He awakens tied next to Jin. They are in the Daikan's torture area. The Daikan has apparately caught the two and comments that his son was killed in the fire. For that loss, he tortures them until their beheadment. Fuu rumages through the ashes of the tea shop. The owners comment they are not her relatives, but she is welcome to travel with them. She declines and states that the fire has strengthened her determination to do what she had sought out to do. Mugen and Jin are alone in their cell. They talk about each others fighting style and how each other has weakness. Jin comments that Mugen is the first person that he couldn't kill. Lying helpless on the floor, they exchange names for the first time. Outside of the prison, Fuu pleads with the guard to let her in and there is a struggle between them. We are now introduced to Momo-san, the flying squirrel. It blinds the guard, so that Fuu can get away. She thanks Momo-san and it says, "your welcome." Fuu reaches Mugen and Jin's cell. She promises to free Mugen and Jin on the condition that they help her find "the Samurai that Smells like Sunflowers." The guards return and chase Fuu away before she can free them. The next morning Fuu over hears that they are to be executed. She heads to the fireworks shop and is able to purchase the fireworks with a sad face. The owner had just got them in, and apparently didn't want to sell them, but he gives them away anyways. It is the final hour for Mugen and Jin. Mugen looks toward the sun and comments that, "today isn't the end," and the story is back to where it started. As the sword comes down on Mugen, he dodges and is able to kick the sword from the executioner's hand. Jin cuts himself free, but they get cornered back to back. Mugen informs Jin that he will put off their battle as they attack the henchmen. The hack and slash begins. The Daikan pleads Jin to spare his life, but kills him. On the roof top, Fuu ingites her fireworks and tosses them to the ground. They explode with great magesty, and Mugen and Jin make their escape. Back on the street and away from the commotion, Mugen brings up their unfinished business, but Fuu runs in. She reminds them of their promise and they cant kill each other if they are to help her. They leave their options upto fate and toss a coin. If Fuu's coin lands on heads; they can kill each other. If tails; the latter. Mugen tosses the coin high in the air. It lands on tails, and on Fuu's forehead, nonetheless. The henchmen catch up to the group, and they take off running, incidentally Fuu trips on her shoes again.
The Daikan's son is wearing a komono with 2 stripes down the arms. The komonos in this episode also features logos which resemble Adidas, Converse, and Puma. Mugen comments that he is from Ryukyu, an island chain that includes Okinawa. We will learn more about this later. Cornering the Daikan in the torture arena, Jin says a proverb "Buddhas face doesn't appear twice" which roughly translates to "you won't get lucky a second time. This is a reference to the first time that he spared his life on the road. Pleading with the guard, Fuu says she will do anything. He makes the lude comment of sex and Fuu slaps him in the face. "Not anything!" When Fuu receives the circular firewords, she carries them in her chest, which they appear as breasts. |
